HOW TO TAKE YOUR FIRST
STEP OUT INTO THE BIG WORLD?

Oh, college years are the best years in a person's life, they say. It is probably because you do not have to work yet. Or do you?

Actually, according to many studies in the US, more than half of undergraduate students work at least 30 hours per week and some even manage to balance full-time job and school. The reasons could be various: someone just needs extra money to buy tickets for concerts of a favorite band or fancy clothes while someone aspires to save up some seed money, and there are of course students who have to make a living for themselves or even support their families. Whatever the reason, most students are terrified when it comes to looking for a job. That is completely understandable. You have no work experience yet, you are not so certain about your skills, you do not know what you're going to say at job interviews and what the hell are you supposed to write on your resume.
First of all, calm down and take a deep breath. It is better to take baby steps. The first one would be to create a resume online (for free) and download it to send out later on to potential employers.

Still frightened? Good.

Since you’re already reading this you obviously know that the best way to create your resume for free is to use CV generators like Applyya. Unfortunately, there is no service in the world to help you actually write this student resume of yours. Nevertheless, we will do our best and help you with some useful pieces of advice.

education section

EXTENDED EDUCATION

It's all like in those “adult” professional resumes. You write the full name of your alma mater and your degree. Now, if you had any work experience this would be it, other information would be considered excessive and practically worthless (so do not forget to render your cv once you've got some actual experience!).

But since you're a student, you're allowed and even encouraged to be more verbose. Take your time and think what can you tell about your education in terms of how it helps you to become a professional worth to be hired. Here are just some ideas.

Think of the skills you gained while studying. List them. Describe how are they useful for the job. If you have completed any kind of individual projects during your studying make sure to mention them here in this section, go into details as for what exactly have you done, what discoveries have you made, what have you achieved.

GOT NO EXPERIENCE? ELIMINATE!

Well, that's not a secret that experience is kind of a big deal in one's resume. This is the first sector head-hunters look through (sorry, almost nobody starts with reading your well-composed literary personal statement).

However, given that you're a student you probably do not have a lot of work experience if any. That is a bummer, my friend, but do not despair. Where is that rebellious spirit of youth? If someone says you need experience to get a job, prove them wrong and eliminate that goddamn section from your resume! You heard right. No experience section this time.

Let's get creative and invent something new instead. How about the section of your achievements? It would be a good substitute, don't you think? In this section, you could write about your... well, experience (paradox), but not exactly work kind of experience. Think of any projects you participated in, volunteer work you did because your mother made you (or because you have a kind gentle heart, doesn't really matter now) and describe it in the way that would make it look relevant.

GOT SOME EXPERIENCE? EXAGGERATE!

In case you have some previous work experience forget everything you've just read in the previous paragraphs. Experience is cool, man! And some experience is definitely better than none at all. And our next task would be exaggerating the hell out of that experience.

Let's say you were an intern or had a part-time summer job at some small local company? And while in reality, it was all about balancing between the desks with cups of coffee and answering phone calls with an "Emm", you could make it more interesting in your resume, more professional. You checked the email for your boss and emptied the spam folder - here you go, you managed correspondence, my friend. Once you were asked to tell Lucy, the manager who was late from lunch, that someone was looking for her, - oops, it seems like you had been organizing the meetings. Well, you got the point, right?

It is possible that the jobs you had before were not in any case relevant to the position you're applying for now and exaggeration would not be much of a help here. In that case, you should still mention those jobs and describe how it helped you to form your overall mindset. For instance, being a bartender could make you more responsible and working as a sales assistant helped you to improve your communication skills.

What about the personal profile?

If you do everything right, there is a possibility that head-hunters will actually read this section. Naturally, you'd better be ready for this fortunate turn of events and write a decent personal statement in your student's resume. It should not be that hard, not harder than writing a college essay.

Ok, so an established professional would focus on summarizing of his career achievements but you could describe your vision of your future career instead, share your aspiration and motivation in terms of your career, mention why you want to work on this position and how you will do everything to prove you're qualified enough. Is there any need to mention that personal profile should be personalized for every new position you're applying for?
